Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) 2012

The Horological equivalent of the Oscars, the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) takes place tonight at the sumptuous Grand Théâtre de Genève.  This is the 12th edition of the annual event which this year, is being heralded as an occasion which will promote Watchmaking as the "12th Art" both for it's artistic values and also for it's historical contribution to humanity.

There have also been a few important changes in the makeup of the jury  which will have less retailers - Bravo! ... and the inclusion of three women - Hoopla! - proof , if it were needed that Haute Horlogerie women's collections have advanced from mere "pinkification" of men's watches to bona fide collections for women, complications included.  Also, for the first time, Mexica and China will be represented by jury members.  There have been tweaks made to the categories too - out goes the Best Design Watch prize, to be replaced by the Innovation prize, and entirely suitable addition, since 2012 has been a year characterised by many new and ingenious mechanisms.
