The Rebellion 540 Magnum
Just released are details of the new Rebellion 540 Magnum - a watch which "strongly embodies the Swiss brand’s deep involvement – and success – with Rebellion Racing in endurance car racing" ..... I'll say!
The Rebellion 540 Magnum Tourbillon is so wholly representative of the brand's association with Rebellion Racing that it needs no further narrative from me to reaffirm the connection. All is immediately revealed through these wonderful images kindly provided to us. However, I feel compelled to keep typing.
Rebellion Timepieces are an independent company, Rebellion Racing are privateers. Rebellion Timepieces are youthful and a bit feisty, Rebellion Racing? Ditto. Rebellion Timepieces are Swiss, guess what? So are Rebellion Racing. This is a such a mutually favourable partnership and is one which is so intrinsically linked that we have often pondered the chicken and egg conundrum regarding their Swiss/Swiss pairing – which came first Rebellion Timepieces or Rebellion Racing?
Everything in the Rebellion Timepieces portfolio has automobile-inspired DNA - not just aesthetically but with regard to construction materials used. These are superbly technical, high quality watches produced in limited numbers and powered by exclusive precision movements and are, to say the very least, distinctive and stand-out pieces.
To create the REB T-14 movement, Rebellion enlisted David Candaux and to ensure that he had the right "feel" for his task, he was invited to spend time with the racing team so he could become absorbed by the adrenalin-producing world of Rebellion Racing - lucky guy. At a first glance, you would be forgiven if you were to assume that from his trackside experiences, he not only gained valuable insights for his design but that perhaps he borrowed a few spare parts along the way....
... or perhaps, like me your eye is drawn to the duo of mainspring barrels at 9 and 12 o'clock, one bearing the inscription "Passion, Speed, Rebel" and the other "Extreme, Victory, Glory". Together they provide a power reserve of 14 days, and are in themselves a technical wonder. A chain-driven system with conical gears results in optimum efficiency and the distribution of this enduring reserve of power, a highly symbolic feature of all Rebellion Timepieces, is possible through their in-series connection.
The use of high-tech materials in order to reduce weight remains a strong feature of the 540 Magnum. The large-diameter tourbillon cage is made from ceramicized magnesium, the mainplate is made from aluminium and the 3/4 back plate is created from carbon fibre.
Such a movement should be enjoyed and not obscured. With this in mind, the dial is openworked and the indications, the central hours and minutes hands, the retrograde seconds at 6 o'clock and the chain-driven power reserve arrowheaded indicator at 9 o'clock are all skeletonised.
The sculpted case for this extraordinary piece is made from carbon fibre and measures up at 46mm x 56.7mm x 19.6mm. Penned by Eric Giroud, (the man is quite simply a genius) it is as dramatic as its predecessors, and features a look-see through to the power reserve and its chain via case-side sapphire, a Giroud speciality.
The Rebellion 540 Magnum Tourbillon will be limited to just 10 pieces.
