1815 Annual Calendar by A. Lange & Söhne
2017 GPHG Calendar Category Finalist
It's been three years since A. Lange & Söhne scooped the honours in the GPHG Calendar category, but they're back in 2017 with a new hand winding calibre and the magnificent 1815 Annual Calendar in pink gold.
In its round 40mm case of 18kt pink gold, and with a dial layout which is classical and superbly appointed, the 1815 Annual Calendar by A. Lange & Söhne stands out among the six preselected finalists in the 2017 GPHG Calendar category as being the most traditional with the Glashütte brand's pure aesthetics.
With its calendar functions split across a pair of slightly recessed subdials for pointer day, date and month, and a beautifully detailed moonphase shared with the small seconds, it is functional, reserved and elegant; straightforward yet sophisticated.
Featuring a new manual winding movement calibre L051.3, which is visible through its sapphire caseback, the craftsmanship and finishing throughout is to the manufacture's default standard of uncompromising excellence, with the distinctive three quarter plate decorated with Glashütte ribbing, blued screws and its lovely large balance, swan neck adjustment and hand engraved cock.
As ever, it would take a brave soul to bet against A. Lange & Söhne in any category, but there are other real contenders with their own expectations here too, and each one's attributes will be the subject of an intense jury debate.
The Watch Press prediction
Certainly a strong candidate to win the Calendar category Aiguille, although Audemars Piguet, Greubel Forsey or maybe newcomer Krayon will make the decision a close one. Previous winners were Hermès in 2016, MB&F in '15 and indeed Lange & Söhne in 14.
