If the secret to winning a juror's affection is by standing out from its rivals, then the spellbinding débutante Everywhere by Krayon, with Universal Sunrise and Sunset display, might be enjoying a celebratory end to the year of its arrival on the world stage of Haute Horlogerie.
Rarely does a contender materialise right out of the blue which makes its rivals and the jury sit up and pay attention, but such is the case with Neuchâtel-based specialist movement design and development company Krayon, and its remarkable Everywhere watch, with its spellbinding array of pointers and mechanically programmable Universal Sunrise and Sunset complication. Simply put, this is an extraordinary wristwatch of bewildering complexity and exquisite execution, and it will take some beating in the 2017 GPHG Calendar category.
Tackling a problem never before undertaken, Krayon have ingeniously devised, via a self winding movement which features four differentials, eighty-four gear assemblies and a convenient operating mechanism, a wristwatch on which the variables of latitude and longitude can be set to display, in conjunction with Equation of Time, in a beautiful visual arrangement of overlapping night blue discs, the accurate times of sunrise and sunset, which are easily and continuously adjustable to correspond to any location on the globe between 60°N and 60°S.
Its ease of use is thanks to the solution which enable all settings to be configured using only the crown for adjustment and the pusher to select between the options of date, latitude, longitude and UTC, to calibrate to the desired location. The reward is a fascinating novelty, which on its own, visually tracks the lengthening and shortening of the daylight hours, as weeks, months and seasons come and go.
Krayon's in-house movement comprises some 595 individual components, compressed into a piece just 6.7mm tall, and it's self winding too, with a gold micro rotor incorporated into the plate.
Krayon have made a dramatic entrance with Everywhere Universal Sunrise Sunset and if innovation and invention are factors for the jury to consider, then it definitely has the potential to lift this award, even if Greubel Forsey's Quantième Perpétuel à Équation will score highly on those counts too.

Would I like it to win? Yes. Could it win? Indeed. MB&F's Legacy Machine Perpetual took the honours in 2016, so contemporary creativity is no disadvantage. Will it win? Yes. Why not?
