For all those aficionados out there who consider the tourbillon to be nothing more than a frivolous function and not a complex complication, then the TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer-02T with its modest price will perhaps provide a vindication of sorts.
They say that “a new brush sweeps clean” and sure enough, since Jean-Claude Biver became CEO at TAG Heuer, there have been a multitude of changes – the watch industry likes to use the gentle terms of “realignment” and “restructuring” but really, this has been less of a transition and more of a revolution.
Product placement is the key to any company’s success, and this is also the genre that M. Biver excels in. So, going forward, the technically accomplished Calibre CH80 column-wheel chronograph has been axed, and its blueprint has been utilized to create a tourbillon model which promises to sell an in and around the £12,000 mark in the UK.
For your money, you not only get in-house COSC-certified mechanics plus the flying tourbillon, it also comes in a handsome package of a 45mm titanium case with enough stencil-like skeletonisation on its face to remind you of a Mille, or better still something from the Linde Werdelin portfolio. Reuse of the abandoned Calibre CH80, means that the tourbillon can rest at the 6 o’clock position, while the counters take up the 3 and 9 o’clock locations.
Options are an unlimited production titanium case with black titanium bezel model or the more expensive 250 piece limited edition “Black Phantom” model which is about as stealthy as can be.
