The Linde Werdelin Oktopus II Titanium Blue

In time for BaselWorld 2012, Linde Werdelin launched the Oktopus II Double Date - a serious divers watch, and seriously cool to boot.  So far there has been a rose gold edition - quiet and understated, and a titanium yellow edition - a screamer.  If, like me you'd prefer something betwixt and between these two models then it is here -  handsome, useful, wearable, as deep-dialed as ever and encased in icy titanium with some very pelagic blue touches -  the Linde Werdelin Oktopus II Titanium Blue.

A few details make this watch remarkable; a fixed bezel - elapsed dive time and all sorts of other useful information are displayed on the highly acclaimed LW Reef which connects to the piece when diving; it's case construction which is extremely complex but ultimately designed to last - it uses the theory behind the diving bell whose compartmental engineering served to isolate and protect the diver from both water pressures and penetration and lastly, it's 3D dial which makes for a most interesting of dive watch faces - there is stencil-work, skeleton-work, ripple effects and of course the octopus icon with "limbs" on the lower dial and "eyes" on the date wheels at 10 and 2 o'clock.

This is at 44mm a big piece, but it's sculpted form is designed to hug the wrist.  With a Linde Werdelin watchcase expect the unexpected - abrupt angles, squared-off edges, slants and slopes and deviations from the normal.

Pursuit of design perfection is a science for Linde Werdelin and this watch features some subtle inclusions, the ceramic bezel has been broadened - a showcase for some satin and polished finishing contrasts, a hint of blue can be glimpsed on the tension discs beneath the screws and the case finish has been tinkered with to achieve a less polished and rougher appearance.  Think that these are merely cosmetic nips and tucks?  Well they are.  But having redefined the Divers watch, having developed a new and innovative approach of how a Diver's watch should display information, perhaps all that was left to be added were the minutiae.  These are now in place.  Now it is complete.
