The new models from Watches and Wonders 2020 are just breaking cover, but already the eye-catching new Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Chronograph Calendar model is demanding attention.
It’s not a show-stopping timepiece in the traditional sense, however with pristine styling and the inclusion of a newly developed JLC calibre there is much to admire in in this quietly handsome beauty.
Forming part of a refreshed Master Control collection, this piece incorporates a column-wheel and vertical clutch mechanism plus a triple calendar display with moonphase. All good stuff, but alas with the pen in the wrong hands, and only a 40mm case to play with, arranging such a compendium of indications can often go askew. However, this is not the case with this model, which displays its functions on a silvery sunray finished dial with reassuring equipoise.
With a classic layout, the dials for the small seconds and the 30-minute counter are placed at 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock respectively. Joining them on the lower sector, an exquisite moonphase combines with a pointer date indication.
The apertures for the day and month just beneath the Jaeger-LeCoultre marque are proportioned so that they blend rather than dominate, and while the diminutive number 12, razor sharp hands and the elongated hour markers are marginally retro, this dial has the pristine styling one should expect from a high-end modern sports timer.
As stated this piece is powered by a new calibre, the JLC 759 automatic movement which was developed to enable Jaeger-LeCoultre to bring the superb combination of chronograph + Triple Calendar + moonphase together for the first time. Beating at 28,800vph it is equipped with a power reserve of 65 hours. A sapphire caseback allows for a full appreciation of its Geneva-Striped bridges and its golden JLC inscribed rotor.
The Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Chronograph Calendar watch is available with either stainless steel case or in the company’s Le Grande Rose Gold, a proprietary precious metal alloy which prevents ruinous fading.
