Newly unveiled, the Lundis Bleus Vipera Aspis Blue Green watch features a powerful symbolic snake upon its dial, crafted with extraordinary delicacy. While this seductive creature has been surrounded by a multitude of firmly held spiritual beliefs throughout our history, such as immortality and transformation and hope, during these unprecedented times, its presence is more relevant than ever.
When it comes to watch dials, Lundis Bleus are a veritable melting pot of creativity. In a portfolio comprising of three main collections one can choose from the Essentielles, which features hammered metallic dials, the minimalist and colourful Contemporaines series and Métiers d’Art models where the artisan crafts of hand engraving and Grand Feu enamelling are superb. The Vipera Aspis Blue Green watch is the debut piece of a new animal themed collection in which each model will offer Pièce Unique exclusivity.
In every sense, this is a superb demonstration of the fine artisan craft of cloisonné enamel and one which demanded three full weeks of craftsmanship. To create the snake’s scaly profile, 107 gold wires, some less than 1 millimetre in length, were positioned by hand. Once accomplished, the frangible process of enamelling could begin. In all, 15 shades of transparent and opalescent enamels where applied layer upon layer, until the exact shade was achieved and the artwork required 9 firings at 830°C. At any stage, ruinous and irreversible damage was possible. The end result of this patient craftsmanship and perseverance is nothing less than spectacular.
While the dial is the stellar feature of the model, Lundis Bleus watch cases are also noteworthy. Featuring rounded and polished bezels and lugs which fall away gently from the sides, each one is finished with exemplary attention to detail. The Vipera Aspis Blue Green model is housed within a stainless steel example sized at 40mm across. A blue mineral caseback reveals a jewel-like glimpse through to the Sellita automatic movement. Stretching across the blueness is the Lundis Bleus logo, derived from the chemical structure of the alcohol molecule. It is a reference to the origins of the company name and perhaps philosophy, and it recalls the traditional privilege given to watchmakers who would, on occasion, require an extended weekend following the kind of over indulgence to which I give my complete approval.
