As we all yearn for sunnier times and shorter shadows, the deep blue hue of the ocean is captured in the dials of two new Panerai Radiomir Mediterraneo Collection models, the Radiomir PAM 1144 and the Radiomir PAM 1078.

Panerai watches are known by their numbers, but these two handsome pieces are also filed under the name “Mediterraneo”, a boutique-only collection, which references the intense pelagic character of their dials and the artistic engravings on their casebacks.

The Radiomir, which began life on the drawing board as a functional timepiece for the Italian Incursori is so-named because of the highly radioactive powdered concoction which was placed into sealed glass tubes within the movement to provide luminosity.  Far from its utilitarian roots, these days the Radiomir has evolved into a style icon and a symbol of Italian flair.

Both new Mediterraneo models have graduated blue sun-brushed dials with beautifully contrasting beige Super-Luminova Arabic numerals and markers for the hours and the small seconds. 

The smaller of the two, the Radiomir PAM 1144, is sized at 42mm and has a mirror-polished stainless steel case. Inside, the manual-wind Panerai in-house calibre P.1000 movement enables 3 days of power reserve when its twin barrels are fully wound.  The lack of a rotor means that this one is slender too, at just 11.2mm high.

Bulkier, but made from ultra-light titanium, the Radiomir PAM 1078 measures 45mm x 12.2mm and has an eye-pleasing satin-brushed case finish.   Unlike its little brother, its girth allows for an Arabic numeral at the 9 o’clock. This model is powered by the automatic Panerai In-house P.4000 calibre which it also retains power for 3 days.

Both pieces are water resistant to 100m and they each have sapphire casebacks upon which an undulating pattern has been created by a metallisation process.  Beyond these swirling waves, one can glimpse the pristine plainness of their calibres.

The Panerai Radiomir PAM 1078 and Panerai Radiomir PAM 1144 are presented on dark blue alligator straps with light blue inner lining.
